Points Sparks Time Down Home

"It's a tough place to play at," said Thunder guard Russell Westbrook about San Antonio. "They have the best home record in the league. We just didn't get off to the start we wanted to defensively."

Right behind the Spurs, who are a gaudy 13-1 at home, are the Blazers, who improved to 11-1 at the Rose Garden with a 117-97 rout of Denver on Saturday. Nicolas Batum returned from a brief two-game absence due to a balky knee to bury a franchise record nine three-pointers en route to a career-high 33 points against the Nuggets.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 29 points and nine rebounds while Marcus Camby pulled down 20 boards for the Blazers, who have won five straight on their home floor.

On the injury front for the Blazers, point guard Raymond Felton, who left Saturday's game with a sprained left foot, is questionable for tonight.

(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The suddenly shaky Denver Nuggets will try to avoid a season-high third straight loss tonight when they welcome the Houston Rockets to Pepsi Center. The Nuggets, who are opening up a three-game homestand, have dropped four of five overall after Saturday's 117-97 setback in Portland. Danilo Gallinari netted 20 points while Kosta Koufos finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds in that one for Denver.

"They're one of the best home teams in basketball. The times we played them, they're a top-five team. They've played great," Nuggets head coach George Karl said of the Blazers.

Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry scored 24 points apiece for the Rockets and Patrick Patterson had 14 off the bench in that one as the Timberwolves snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Rockets at home and won for only the third time in the last 18 meetings overall.

"We just started out with no defensive intensity," Houston coach Kevin McHale told the team's website. "We can't be a pretty team, we can't be a team that just goes out there and plays easy; we've got to be a team that's going to go out there and fight like we did when we got mad."

(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - San Antonio opens up its annual Rodeo Road Trip tonight in Memphis against the Grizzlies. Since 2003, the Spurs have been forced on an extended trek for much of February since the AT&T Center hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The Spurs has consistently posted winning records during the excursion, including an NBA-record longest single road trip winning streak (eight games, achieved in 2003).

This year's version of the Rodeo Road Trip will be a nine-game affair that includes tonight's stop on Beale Street as well as games in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Detroit, Toronto, in LA vs. the Clippers, Utah, Portland and Denver before the team returns to the Alamo City for a Feb. 29 date with Chicago.

FOOTBALL TRASH TALK

NFL Football Trash Talk

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their supplements to worry about what their opponents are doing).

Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this wont be an intelligent discussion.

Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).

Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.

Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit. And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. The plug-necked yahoos on your team, you can say, will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.

The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesnt focus only on your opponents team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.

What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Wheres your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, I'll try to type slower for you next time. Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.

Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, dont just conclude by saying your opponent is a twerp who drafts like my grandmother. Say that your opponent is a sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars. By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.

But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You wont be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, Im sure, to reply.

In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.
