Broncos open 17-0 lead in fourth quarter

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Jake Plummer threw two touchdown passes to Javon Walker and the Denver Broncos, who had yet to allow a touchdown this season, led the New England Patriots 17-0 two minutes into the fourth quarter Sunday night.

Plummer, criticized in Denver after throwing four interceptions and no touchdowns in his first two games, outplayed Tom Brady, who had his third straight mediocre game since losing his top two wide receivers - David Givens as a free agent to Tennessee and Deion Branch in a trade with Seattle after the Patriots first game.

The weakness of the passing attack allowed the Broncos' speedy defense to concentrate on New England's strong running game. The Patriots lost Corey Dillon to an arm injury in the second quarter and managed just 45 yards on 20 carries through three quarters.

Jason Elam gave Denver (1-1) a 3-0 lead with a 23-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. The Broncos made it 10-0 at halftime after Plummer's 32-yard scoring pass to Walker 50 seconds before intermission.

Then Walker, obtained in a trade with Green Bay, scored on an 83-yard pass play with 1:57 gone in the fourth quarter. That play boosted Plummer to 13-of-28 for 229 yards and no interceptions.

The closest the Patriots (2-0) came to scoring in the first half was when rookie Stephen Gostkowski's 37-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Domonique Foxworth on the series before Walker's first touchdown.

New England didn't do any better in the third quarter when its deepest penetration was the Denver 33-yard line. Josh Miller punted on all three of New England's possessions in the quarter.

Brady, 1-4 in his career against Denver, completed 15 of 29 passes for 175 yards and no interceptions and missed some receivers by a considerable margin. He had completed just 50 percent of his passes entering the game.

The Patriots, who beat Buffalo 19-17 in the season opener with a late safety, nearly got another in the third quarter after Miller's 47-yard punt. Darrent Williams fielded it at the Denver 6, was hit at the 2, and driven into the end zone where he went down. Despite protests by several New England players, the ball was placed at the 2 and Denver got to its 23 before punting.

The game was a rematch of last season's playoff game in which the Broncos ended the Patriots' hopes for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl championship with a 27-13 win with help from New England's five turnovers. One was Brady's pass that Champ Bailey intercepted and returned 100 yards to the Patriots 1.

Gostkowski, taking over after Adam Vinatieri left as a free agent for Indianapolis, also had a field-goal attempt blocked a week earlier in a 24-17 win over the New York Jets. On both blocks, rushers had good penetration through the offensive line, although Sunday night's kick also appeared to be low.

The Broncos could have had a bigger lead since they had a first-and-goal at the New England 2 in the second quarter. But center Tom Nalen was called for offensive holding, sending the ball back to the 12, and Denver eventually settled for the field goal by Elam, who is 5-for-6 this season.

The game was telecast live in China, where the Patriots will play an exhibition game next August against the Seattle Seahawks. That was announced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell before the game. It will be played at 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Workers Stadium in Beijing, exactly one year before the start of the Olympic Games in China. It will be telecast live at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Aug. 9 in the United States.
